I Choose Love: Community Prayer Gathering

On Friday, January 23rd, churches and their clergy from around Northfield gathered together in prayer for an end to the radical violation of justice at the hands of ICE and to the brutal treatment of immigrants and protestors. Listen to Rev. Cindy’s moving poem below.

First UCC is proud to stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

First UCC’s Visioning Process

First UCC has completed our visioning process that we began last fall. The purpose was to build a shared understanding of our congregation, deepen relationships through reflection and storytelling, and creatively dream about the future. Our process, which is rooted deeply in a congregational approach, is guided by a Visioning Committee in collaboration with Sarah Lehman, a ministry partner of the MN UCC Conference whose consulting practice specializes in supporting groups through change, conflict, and transition.

Based on all the information compiled, the Visioning Committee has drafted a list of three-year strategic priorities that Council will be voting on this month. The final document will be presented to the congregation at a meeting after worship on May 17.  We hope you will plan to join us!

Welcome Rev. Alan Storey: April 20-26

Alan’s time in Northfield will be shared between clergy, community groups, youth groups, and college classes. In addition to the April 24-25th Manna & Mercy retreat, his key presentations will be Thursday April 23rd at 6:45 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, and worship at First UCC April 26th, with an adult forum to follow. There is also a special invitation for Northfielders to attend an event on the evening of April 21st at Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church in Minneapolis.

Join us and visit with Rev. Alan Storey in Northfield the week of April 20-26th! Rooted in the South African context. Alan is a Gospel storyteller and facilitator of personal and political change. Alan’s commitment to the Jesus way of justice and peace-making was tested early in his life when he faced conscription into the apartheid regime’s military. He chose to be a conscientious objector. He was arrested and faced trial with a six-year prison sentence as the likely outcome. Alan’s trial was abandoned midway, and he became the last conscientious objector to be brought to trial in apartheid South Africa. Over the years he has been involved in numerous civil society organizations addressing: gun violence, racism; state-capture corruption; xenophobia; homophobia; transphobia; spacial apartheid inequality; sex worker discrimination and campaign for a universal basic income. Churches in Northfield, including First UCC, use Alan’s teaching for adult education and Confirmation curriculum. College classes and UCC members have traveled to learn with him in South Africa. Don’t miss this chance!
