I Choose Love: Community Prayer Gathering
On Friday, January 23rd, churches and their clergy from around Northfield gathered together in prayer for an end to the radical violation of justice at the hands of ICE and to the brutal treatment of immigrants and protestors. Listen to Rev. Cindy’s moving poem below.
First UCC is proud to stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
First UCC’s Visioning Process
First UCC has completed our visioning process that we began last fall. The purpose was to build a shared understanding of our congregation, deepen relationships through reflection and storytelling, and creatively dream about the future. Our process, which is rooted deeply in a congregational approach, is guided by a Visioning Committee in collaboration with Sarah Lehman, a ministry partner of the MN UCC Conference whose consulting practice specializes in supporting groups through change, conflict, and transition.
Based on all the information compiled, the Visioning Committee has drafted a list of three-year strategic priorities that Council will be voting on this month. The final document will be presented to the congregation at a meeting after worship on May 17. We hope you will plan to join us!
Pastor Cindy's Sabbatical Plan
As many of you know, I will begin a sabbatical this summer — a time set apart for rest, renewal, and spirital deepening. I am deeply grateful to share in a congregation that values this rhythm, not only for the well-being of its pastors, but for the long-term health of the whole church.
My sabbatical will run from Memorial Day through Labor Day, including two weeks of vacation. My theme for this time is: Breath, Spirit, and the God Who Animates.
In both Hebrew (ruach) and Greek (pneuma), the word for Spirit also means breath or wind. Spirit is not just an idea — it is the breath in our lungs, the wind we cannot control, the life that moves through us. During this sabbatical, I’ll be exploring a simple but profound question: What happens when theology begins with breath instead of words?
I plan to spend time reading and reflecting on the theology of the Spirit, while also incorporating various methods of mindful breathing as a daily spiritual practice. Some of this may take shape in resources for the congregation while I’m away, including a possible study group.
Of course, one of the most important parts of sabbatical is true rest. For that reason, I will be stepping away from regular communication and pastoral responsibilities during this time. This is not easy for me — I care deeply about staying connected — but it is an essential part of allowing real renewal to take place. I trust in the strength of this community to care for one another in that time.
I am especially grateful for Pastor Lauren, who will take on additional leadership during my absence. She will be preaching regularly, overseeing staff, and tending to many of the responsibilities of the Senior Minister. We will also have part-time sabbatical coverage to support pastoral care, worship leadership, and adult faith formation. Our church will be in good hands.
My last Sunday before sabbatical will be May 24, and I hope you will join us in worship as we mark this transition together.
I will share more details in the coming weeks. Thank you for making this time possible.
With gratitude,
Pastor Cindy

Members of our UCC community know how to care for one another — and our upcoming Spring Workday is yet another expression of that spirit. We’re gathering on Saturday, May 16 to give our church home the fresh start it deserves for spring. Whether you have two hours or the full morning, your presence makes a difference.
We’ll have a full lineup of tasks. Many hands make light work and every hour you give makes a difference to those who walk by or through our doors.
If you are available to help, please click below to volunteer. We’re excited to see you!

ISAIAH folks in the Northfield area invite all to join them on us for an action-based discussion. We will be focusing on what actions we should take and what coalitions can be forged with local groups to be blessed peace-makers in the face of a foolish and unjust war, support the least among us as the federal government seeks to make them scapegoats, guard against threats to democracy, and more. There is work we all know is needed, and we’d love input and help from all to decide on how to proceed in the months ahead!

Volunteer for Coffee Hour!
The coffee hour team needs you! Please consider volunteering after worship on Sundays from 11:30-12:30. If you are interested in leading, baking, serving or volunteering in general, please click here. Thank you!

The Nakba
Al-Nakba, meaning “The Catastrophe,” is a solemn day of remembrance for Palestine. It’s the day of the year when we remember over 750,000 Palestinians who were ethnically cleansed from their homes and homeland, creating the largest ethnic diaspora in existence to this day. It is the day we remember the more than 400 villages that were depopulated during the establishment of the state of Israel.
After two-and-a-half-years of the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza and the continued annexation of Palestinian land in the West Bank, we know that the Nakba was not a singular event. Rather, it is an ongoing project of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Palestine. The Nakba has never ended.
Please join us as we remember the lives, the land and homes stolen by the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
“The tragedy in Palestine is not just a local one; it is a tragedy for the world, because it is an injustice that is a menace to the world’s peace.”
