And this ladies and gentlemen is why we play the game.
Trailing 5 to 3 with two out in the top of the sixth, the Fighting Apostles exploded for six runs, fueled by big hits and balletic base running (think Matt Forster), and then held St. Dominic’s White at bay for a dramatic, come-from-behind 9-5 win.
Doug Morris’s bases loaded double to left center knocked in two runs, and Erik Burton followed with a three-run inside the park homerun to seal the deal. Lon Kruse drove in Mark Mueller-Dahl with an added insurance run.
Defensively, it was Dave Burton Night. For the uninitiated, let’s just say a left-hander has no business playing second base. But Dave, a left-hander, gamely answered the call and then handled every ball hit his way, participated in three double plays, and made numerous pivots at second that only a chiropractor would fully appreciate. His play was so dominant and so inspiring for at least the next few weeks, we will be known as “Dave Burton and the Fighting Apostles.
We have a two-week break in the schedule now. We get Memorial Day weekend off and then our game with New Covenant on May 31 has been canceled. So, we resume play on Sunday, June 7, with a 7:20 p.m. game with Bethel at Babcock Park.
