The Fighting Apostles defeated the Rejoice Disciples in an old-fashioned ecclesiastical throw-down at Babcock Park last Sunday evening. Flawless defense and timely hitting made for a crisp 12-2 victory.
Longtime fans attributed the inspired play to the 2012 debut of the Old Scout, Dave Hauck, who directs traffic from the third base coaching box when he feels like it, and the presence of our celebrity coach, Pastor Bob.
Second baseman Christian Hakala set the tone for the defense in the first inning, ranging far into right field to make an over-the-shoulder catch. Seth Huiras used the oven mitts to make some nice plays at the “hot corner.” Matt Forster took one for the team with a heroic dive in a vain attempt to snare a fly ball in foul territory, and Brad Hoff took one off the chest at first base, but was able to recover to make the toss to a hustling Doug Morris for the out.
Our Jacobs had the big knocks this week. Jacob Anderson led off the third with a bomb to the fence in right for a triple. He scored, and three batters later, Jacob Newman parked one over the left-field 290-foot sign for a three-run homer. We scored seven times that inning, and when you’re playing good defense, you don’t need much more than that.
Tim Newman went the first four innings for the win, before giving way to knuckle-baller Morris in the fifth.
Steep hill to climb this week. We play the perennial league champions, St. Dominic’s Blue, 7:10 p.m. at Sechler One. You are invited.
